Come, the Final Day has come
My life is flashing by
No woman don't cry
And Satan my old friend
Prepare yourself to fight
To souls you have no right
Our deal, just has no moral standing!

Bold, I stand to you bold
My fiery blood is cold
Will is in my sword
My freedom it will mould
Come close let's start the fight
Come close let's see your might
My friend,
this dream just can't be ended!

Gibson vs. Fender --

Lost, a useless fight I've lost
My body's back to dust
The search is really over

No! Do not forget this ghost
The truth is never dust
And dreams unlock all doors
Yes! I'm not afraid to die
I'm not afraid to see
I'm not afraid to cry
I'm not afraid to pay
I'm not afraid to give
I'm not afraid to leave
Our love will never end!

The old witch yanked the staff out of its shadow and waved it vaguely at Esk.

"Here. It's yours. Take it. I just hope this is the right thing to do."

Esk took the staff and peered at it.

"It's very nice," she said uncertainly. "The carvings are pretty. What's it for?"

"Sit down now. And listen properly for once. On the day you were born . . . ."

". . . and that's the shape of it."

Esk looked hard at the staff, then at Granny.

"I've got to be a wizard?"

"Yes. No. I don't know."

"That isn't really an answer, Granny," Esk said reproachfully. "Am I or aren't I?"

"Women can't be wizards," said Granny bluntly. "It's agin nature. You might as well have a female blacksmith."

"Actually I've watched dad at work and I don't see why -"

"Look," said Granny hurriedly, "you can't have a female wizard any more than you can have a male witch, because -"

"I've heard of male witches," said Esk meekly.

"Warlocks!"

"I think so."

"I mean there's no male witches, only silly men," said Granny hotly. "If men were witches, they'd be wizards. It's all down to -"she tapped her head "- headology. How your mind works. Men's minds work different from ours, see. Their magic's all numbers and angles and edges and what the stars are doing, as if that really mattered. It's all power. It's all -" Granny paused, and dredged up her favourite word to describe all she despised in wizardry, "- jommetry."

"That's all right, then," said Esk, relieved. "I'll stay here and learn witchery."

"Ali," said Granny gloomily, "that's all very well for you to say. I don't think it will be as easy as that."

"But you said that men can be wizards and women can be witches and it can't be the other way around."

...

Granny pointed to the staff. Esk shrugged.

"It's just an old stick."

Granny shook her head. Esk blinked.

"No?"

"No."

"And I can't be a witch?"

"I don't know what you can be. Hold the staff."

"The tinderbox is -" Esk began.

Granny stood up. In the dimness of the kitchen she seemed to grow until she filled it with shifting, ragged shadows, shot with menace. Her eyes glared down at Esk.

"Show me," she commanded, and her voice had ice in it.

"But -"said Esk desperately, clutching the heavy staff to her and knocking her stool over in her haste to back away.

"Showme."

With a scream Esk spun around. Fire flared from her fingertips and arced across the room. The kindling exploded with a force that hurled the furniture around the room and a ball of fierce green light spluttered on the hearth.

Changing patterns sped across it as it spun sizzling on the stones, which cracked and then flowed. The iron fireback resisted bravely for a few seconds before melting like wax; it made a final appearance as a red smear across the fireball and then vanished. A moment later the kettle went the same way.

..

She patted her singed hair gingerly with a shaking hand. "I think this calls for a nice cup of, a nice cup of cold water."

Esk sat looking in wonder at her hand.

"That was real magic." she said at last, "And I did it."

The Vampire Witches Chronicles - Womyn's novel
AudioBook - 5:17

"Well, come on in," said a womanish voice as I hesitated, and when I did, I was quite alarmed by what I saw. In a haze of cigarette smoke, there was a young woman sitting in a highly seductive posture at the dressing table, her youthful and fastripening body clothed only in a scant white cotton petticoat, its thin cloth hardly disguising her full breasts and pink nipples, or the dark shadow between her legs."

The Reef by Nora Roberts

He wished he could blame this restlessness that chewed at him on something as simple as sex. But that basic thirst had been slaked. He still wanted her, he couldn’t look at her and not want her. Yet it went so far beyond the physical.
He supposed it had always been beyond the physical.
How could he explain that he was a different man with her? Could be a different man if she felt even a shadow for him of what he felt for her. Living without her was possible. He’d done it before and knew he would do it again. But he would never be what he wanted to be, or have what he wanted to have, unless she was part of it.
There was nothing he could do but take what she gave him, and let her go when the time came.
He knew what it was like to exist for the moment. Most of his life had been like that. It was demeaning to realize that one woman could make him yearn for a future, for boundaries and responsibilities.
A woman, he knew, who didn’t believe him capable of accepting any responsibility.
There was no way to prove her wrong. They both understood that if he found what he was looking for, he would take it. And he would use it. Once he possessed Angelique’s Curse, he would lose Tate. There was no way he could hold both of them, and no way he could live with himself if he ignored his debt to his father.
Now, alone, watching the stars mirror themselves on the water, he could hope that the necklace and all it stood for remained buried under the greedy sea.
“I’m sorry.” She came in quickly, her hair flying as she turned to close and lock the door. “I was sketching the ivory fan and lost track. It’s fantastic to realize something so delicate could survive untouched and perfect for all these years.”
She stopped. He was staring at her in the way he sometimes did that made her feel awkward and terrifyingly transparent. What was in his mind? she wondered.
How did he hide those emotions that drove him? It was like looking at a volcano and knowing that far beneath the surface, lava was boiling.
“Are you angry? It’s only quarter past.”
“No, I’m not angry.” Those eyes, with all the secrets glinting, held hers relentlessly. “Do you want some wine?”
“You brought wine?” Suddenly nervous, she shook back her hair. “That’s nice.”
“I filched it from La Rue. He picked up some fancy French kind when he went ashore with Marla the other day. It’s already opened.” Matthew picked up the bottle and poured two glasses.
“Thanks.” She took the glass and wondered what to do next. Normally, they simply dived to the floor and tore off their clothes, as greedy as children unwrapping gifts. “There’s a storm brewing west of here. It could be trouble.”
“It’s still early for hurricanes. Buck’s keeping his eye on it, though. Tell me about the fan La Rue brought up this afternoon.”
“It’s probably worth two or three thousand. More to a serious collector.”
He reached out to touch her hair. “Tate, tell me about the fan.”

Frank Herbert - Heretics Of Dune Dune Chronicles, Book 5

Audio-book - 23 h 20 min

The child on the lawn appeared to be about twelve standard years of age, but appearance could be deceptive with a ghola not yet awakened to his original memories. The child took that moment to look up at the watchers above him. He was a sturdy figure with a direct gaze that focused intently from beneath a black cap of karakul hair. The yellow sunlight of early spring cast a small shadow at his feet. His skin was darkly tanned but a slight movement of his body shifted his blue singlesuit, revealing pale skin at the left shoulder.
"Not only are these gholas costly but they are supremely dangerous to us," Schwangyu said. Her voice came out flat and emotionless, all the more powerful because of that. It was the voice of a Reverend Mother Instructor speaking down to an acolyte and it emphasized for Lucilla that Schwangyu was one of those who
protested openly against the ghola project.
Taraza had warned: "She will try to win you over." "Eleven failures are enough," Schwangyu said.
Lucilla glanced at Schwangyu's wrinkled features, thinking suddenly: Someday I may be old and wizened, too. And perhaps I will be a power in the Bene Gesserit as well.
Schwangyu was a small woman with many age marks earned in the Sisterhood's affairs. Lucilla knew from her own assignment-studies that Schwangyu's conventional black robe concealed a skinny figure that few other than her acolyte dressers and the males bred to her had ever seen. Schwangyu's mouth was wide, the lower lip constricted by the age lines that fanned into a jutting chin. Her manner tended to a curt abruptness that the uninitiated often interpreted as anger. The commander of the Gammu Keep was one who kept herself to herself more than most Reverend Mothers.
Once more, Lucilla wished she knew the entire scope of the ghola project.
Taraza had drawn the dividing line clearly enough, though: "Schwangyu is not to be trusted ..."

Anne Rice - Servant of the Bones - 1996

Audio-book - 4 h 01 min

(The Witching Hour)

- Terry Pratchett,

Anne Rice (e.g. Merrick a.k.a. Merrique).

3 - "tell me the whole plan, tell me the whole plan" -

Servant of the Bones -

I was about to walk out of the room. But I decided for obvious reasons that it was best to vanish. I did so slowly so as to amaze them, growing transparent, rising, extending my arms, then vanishing altogether.

A huge mob surrounded the Temple of the Mind. I came down into it invisible, amid the cameras and the radio people and understood that Gregory Belkin was to appear to make a momentous statement at 6 p.m. or before.

I went up and into the building and found Gregory seated in a huge room with five men, amid the big electric maps and numerous monitors.

As I descended, Gregory spoke:

"Nothing will happen until two hours after I'm declared officially dead-" he said, and these words immediately galvanized me.

I appeared in my full Babylonian robes of blue velvet and gold, and my long hair and beard, and I snatched him up from the chair.

The men raced at me, and I threw them back.

"No, be calm," said Gregory. "This is an angel sent from God to help us."

"Is that so?" I said. "What have you done with your brother? If you don't talk the truth to me, I'll tear you limb from limb and all these men will die with you.

Gregory sighed and then he told the other men to go. "Everything will go as planned; only this angel needs to know the scope of his power," he said. "Say nothing to anyone."

The men at the table left with amazing speed.

I flung him back down in his chair.

"I know you're going to do something with your brother," I said, "put him in your place to be killed, so that you can rise from the dead! That much is easy to figure and 6 is the hour you've marked for it.

I want your brother now, safe and in my arms to be taken back to his people."

"No, you don't, Azriel," he said with great reasonableness, his confidence flaring up in him like an unquenchable fire. "Sit down and let me tell you what is to happen. You cannot imagine the beauty of it, and Nathan will suffer no pain. He is sedated and hardly knows what will happen to him."

"I'm sure he is!" I said with great contempt, and a memory came

back to me of people saying, "You will not suffer." They were painting gold on my skin.

"If you kill me," Gregory said, "you will change nothing. If you want me to die before 6 o'clock then you will simply move up the time of the Last Days."

He gestured for me to sit down.

I said nothing. But I did have a strong sense of something

- that I

couldn't simply solve this by chopping him up like the Gordian knot.

I took the first chair to his left.

"But you do plan to kill Nathan at six o'clock. You admit it. That's why you put him in the hospital under your name, to create DNA evidence and dental evidence to identify Nathan as you, so that your death would be certified, didn't you?"

He didn't seem at all happy to hear this much figuring.

"That's a crude version of what I accomplished," he said. "But look, the world is at stake, Azriel. Dear God, you must be my Divine Witness."

"Don't get romantic, Gregory, tell me the plan.
