Gazprom offers new gas price to Ukraine –
The price of Russian gas for Ukraine in 2009 could be set at $450 per 1,000 cubic meters of gas, Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said today. He criticized Naftogaz of Ukraine's stance as "irresponsible in respect to European consumers" as no contract for 2009 has been signed yet. According to Miller, Naftogaz rebuffed Gazprom's price offer of $250 per 1,000 cubic meters and withdrew from the talks. Gazprom's proposals to sell Central Asian gas at $370 and $418 per 1,000 cubic meters - in line with European price levels - have also been snubbed by Ukrainian negotiators. "Let us hope that our new offer to supply gas to Ukraine in January 2009 at $450 per 1,000 cubic meters - calculated as the price of gas in Eastern Europe countries bordering on Ukraine minus transit costs - will induce Ukrainian partners to return to the negotiating table shortly," Miller said.
