Russian oil companies will raise roughly RUB 800bn (approx. USD 22.38bn) from the ruble's devaluation in 2009, Russia's Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin stated today at the annual session of the Federal Tax Service board. He pointed out that in September 2008, oil companies approached the Finance Ministry for a tax break of RUB 500bn (approx. USD 13.99bn), but now the devaluation alone would give them an even larger amount.
In addition, Kudrin stressed that the ruble's devaluation has hiked up import costs, which gave Russian goods an advantage. Russian producers, especially agribusinesses, are seeing steady demand. Since mid-2008, the ruble has lost 50 percent of its value against the dollar, suggesting that the price for all import goods will jump 50 percent after their stockpile is depleted.

Using an ATM
Rosa: Hey, Benjamin, it’s Rose. Do you have a minute?
Benjamin: Good morning, Rose. Sure, what do you need?
R: Well, it’s a little embarrassing actually. I am standing in front of an ATM machine and I have no idea what to do, it’s my first time. Could you talk me through it?
B: Of course I will. Don’t worry, it’s very easy. First of all, you put your card in the slot and when the machine swallows it, you enter your PIN.
R: One second… Yes, I did it. Now what?
B: Well, that depends, what do you need to do?
R: I need to take some money off my card.
B: In this case, chose “withdrawal” and give it a second to think.
R: Alright, I think it wants me to enter how much. Oh! And there is a limit too… interesting.
B: Yeah, that’s typical. Did you enter how much you want?
R: Yeah. What do I do now?
B: Just wait a bit. You will hear the machine count out the bills. Do you see them pushed out of the slot below?
R: Yeah, there they are!! Oh, thanks a lot, that really was easy.
B: Not so fast, Rose. Make sure you do not forget to take your receipt and get the card back!
R: Oh yes, of course. Many thanks.
